The first angioplasty was performed more than fifty years ago, and, while angioplasty is largely considered the domain of interventional cardiologists, it represents the first example of interventional radiology in modern medicine.
Today, vascular and interventional radiologists have leveraged the treatment approach first demonstrated in angioplasty and developed an entire field of diagnosis and treatment. Their innovations have expanded the specialty to address illness and injury to nearly every organ and system of the body, providing powerful medical interventions, often with far greater ease than surgery or other more invasive procedures.
There are only a few dozen interventional radiology practices in the nation, and South Florida is fortunate to have among the most expert physicians in the field right in our backyard.
