During a regular pelvic exam with the OBGYN, uterine fibroids are often discovered. If your doctor notices changes in the form of your uterus, this could indicate the presence of uterine fibroids.

Main Treatments for Uterine Fibroids
- Prescription drugs
There are drugs that will help relieve fibroid symptoms momentarily, but the fibroids may still exist. For some women, this is a better choice than surgery. Each patient should discuss prescription choices with her doctor and weigh the complications and side effects before taking any medication.
- Contraceptives
Contraceptives have helped some women find relief from fibroid symptoms (birth control pills). These hormone drugs help to control the menstrual cycle and prevent prolonged bleeding, however, they have little effect on the fibroids’ size or removal.
- Hormone therapy
Many OBGYNs use hormone therapy as a treatment option. It functions by preventing the release of estrogen and progesterone in a woman’s body, causing her to experience symptoms similar to menopause. Menstruation will stop as a result, and fibroids can shrink.
- Hysterectomy
The uterus is removed after a hysterectomy, which is a major operation. Menstruation and the desire to conceive are now terminated as a result of this. Additional organs, such as the fallopian tubes and/or ovaries, can be removed during this operation.
- Myomectomy
Fibroids are surgically dissolved after a myomectomy. The uterus is intact, as in a hysterectomy. A myomectomy can be performed in three forms. The best technique for treating fibroids is determined by their size and quantity.
- Endometrial Ablation
Women who have excessive bleeding between menstrual cycles are more likely to undergo this treatment. Heavy menstrual cycles may be caused by a variety of factors, including hormonal changes. As a result, although it can alleviate symptoms, it does not shrink or remove uterine fibroids.

- Uterine Fibroid Embolization
Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a less invasive way of treating uterine fibroids than the standard approaches described above. Via an IV in the patient’s arm, this secure and successful non-surgical operation is done under conscious sedation. A catheter is inserted into the artery by a tiny nick in the tissue, either in the groin or wrist (this is often discussed in more detail by the doctor). The catheter is guided to the uterine arteries feeding the fibroids using x-ray imaging. Embolic particles the size of grains of sand are inserted into the uterine arteries until the device is in place. This allows the fibroid tumors to shrink by blocking the blood supply to them. The signs disappear as the fibroids shrink.

Interventional radiologists are physicians who specialize in this technique. There are medical doctors who have completed advanced training since graduating from medical school. Ultrasound, X-ray fluoroscopy, (CT) computed tomography, or (MRI) magnetic resonance imaging are all used in interventional radiology to accurately guide treatment without the need for major incisions. Catheters are used to deliver any treatments that are needed.
Studies have shown that over 90% of women who have a UFE procedure experience significant or complete resolution of their fibroid-related symptoms (Radiological Society of North America, Inc., RSNA)
